TUNA! Celebrating San Diego's Famous Fishing Industry showcases the tuna industry in San Diego over the course of 100 years, focusing on the era when San Diego was the world’s tuna fishing capital, from the 1920s until the 1960s. During this time, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese families formed enclaves that thrived along San Diego Bay—each involved in the tuna fishing industry working either on the boats, in the canneries or building the ships and sewing the nets used by the fishermen.
This major family-oriented exhibit lets visitors view the world through the eyes of these families and will include hands-on pole-fishing demonstration stations, packing and canning activities and taking a trip down memory lane with favorite icons of the era like Charlie the Tuna™ and others. Hear their stories and experience what it was like to work in this industry that, for a time, made San Diego the center of the tuna fishing universe.
