Segredos do Convento - Nossa Senhora da Esperança
As the Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres approaches one can view the procession and festivities on May 13, directly on the site http://www.santo-cristo.com/ , and even though it is in Portuguese, one can learn about the activities and the organization behind the feast.
Recognized as largest religious event in the Azores, take a look at the video below, to get a preview of the monastery of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, whose nuns are the caretakers of the statue of the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. It is a rare opportunity to see how these nuns live, their living quarters and interior of the monastery, seldom visited by outsiders.
View in full screen to appreciate the beauty of the local.

Tom Tucker - Superintendent of Cabrillo National Monument Memorial Service
His memorial service was simple, yet full of meaning, for it exemplified the way that Tom led his life. God, Country and Family.
Tom's passing closed another chapter in the relationship between the Cabrillo National Monument and the Portuguese Community in San Diego.
It was Tom Tucker's foresight that gave worldwide projection to the Portuguese explorer at the service of Spain, Juan Rodrigues, Cabrillo, first European to set foot on what is now the shores of the Western United States.
Under his leadership, along with the late Mary R. Giglitto, the perfect team, Cabrillo Festival, gained international recognition, making it the premier history festival in the United Sates.
My first contact with Tom was in late 1974, during the Cabrillo Festival when I was introduced to him by Mary R. Giglitto and Paulo Goulart.
It was a moment of instant bonding, of mutual respect, trust and understanding that was to last many years. I appreciated his deep understanding of the human psyche, and many were the conversations we had about the relationship of the Portuguese Community and Cabrillo, both the park and the person. In his baritone voice, all conversations started with " You know Joe ....".
I will always cherish having known Tom Tucker, for he touched me in a way that only he knew how. I will always cherish his friendship and and most of all his being, Tom.
As a last gesture of my friendship and respect, I was very proud to convey to the family the condolences of the Consul of Portugal in Los Angeles, Mr. Edmundo Macedo on behalf of the Portuguese Government, who could not be present.
Tom R. Tucker, Sr. received a knighthood, from the Portuguese Government in the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator with the grade of Commander.
Below is the biography of Tom Tucker as presented in the memorial pamphlet distributed prior to the memorial service.
In 1963, a change of superintendents occurred and Thomas R. Tucker took over the reins of the monument. The great bulk of the development of the park was under his energetic and capable supervision. Complicating his work at this time was the fact that the other park under his jurisdiction—Channel Islands National Monument—demanded increased attention. Visitation and public use—some of it adverse—of the islands was growing, as was the acreage. The result was that personnel and equipment, including patrol boats, were added to the park. About the time that developments at Cabrillo reached an end, Channel Islands had grown to such size that it was ready to stand on its own feet, and in the spring of 1967, the Park Service broke away from Channel Islands and established it as a separate area. It had been an arduous four years and Tucker could feel a deep sense of satisfaction as each project reached its conclusion.
The developments at Cabrillo began fittingly in 1963—the fiftieth anniversary of the monument. Many changes in thinking have taken place in those fifty years. It has, unfortunately, taken that long to give Cabrillo the honor due him and get his story before the American public.
The completion of the developments at the monument moved the park into a more important position in the National Park System, for it now had the accouterments of a park—a museum and visitor center, a refurnished historic lighthouse, and a more sophisticated interpretive program. Gone were the days of the makeshift amphitheatre where the park interpreters gave lectures on the gray whale and whaling in San Diego. No longer was it necessary to give talks on Cabrillo and on the old lighthouse in the parlor of that structure. But even with these good things, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was still hardly more than a figure of state importance. He had not yet taken his place in the public mind with Coronado and DeSoto.
The first fifty years were spent trying to secure an appropriately developed park to memorialize Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and that was accomplished in 1965. The next fifteen years were devoted to giving Cabrillo the national recognition he deserved and bringing the park into focus. Both finally came about because of two things: the imaginative, energetic, and competent leadership of Supt. Tom Tucker, and the establishment and growth of the Cabrillo Festival.

Guitarra de dois corações
The heart that departs
The heart that stays

The twelve string two heart guitar(viola de dois corações) has been part of the baggage of many an immigrant from the Azores
Este apontamento está no Museu da Imigração Açoriana na R. Grande - This notation can be seen at the Azorean Immigration Museum in Ribeira Grande, Azores.http://mea.cm-ribeiragrande.pt/ We suggest a virtual visit.

Lambareiros; Praia do Almoxarife, Pescadores; Praia do Norte, Namoradores; Ribeirinha, Escarnentos e Salão, Folgazões.

Macau Documentary
Sian Richards introduces this series capturing the sights, sounds and flavours of Asia. Macau offers up an intriguing blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures and traditions, which is reflected in their cuisine - a curious mixture of Indian, Malay, and African together with the Chinese and Portuguese influences. We dine on a summer delicacy, Pork Minchi, a dish that typifies Macau's multicultural nature. Sian takes in the world-famous dragon boat races, samples Portuguese-Cantonese pastries, and wanders into a traditional Chinese medicine shop - where ancient herbs and powders are mixed to cure all ailments

Cabrillo Festival 1976
Every year the Cabrillo Festival reenacts the arrival of Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo, Portuguese navigator at the service of Spain and the first European to set foot on the what is now the western part of the United States. This is a series of photographs I took during the Cabrillo Festival 1976. John Rebelo, was President and José M. L. Alves, Vice President - The event was held then at Shelter Island when Paulo Goulart was the personage of Cabrillo. On the photos Mary R. Gilgitto is seen on the stage as MC and Tony Codina, the second personage of Cabrillo is seen walking toward the bay to coordinate the landing. the Portuguese American Dancers under the direction of Mary Moniz entertained the audience along with the Point Loma Srings, made up of António Garcia da Rosa, Leonel Garcia da Rosa, Manuel (Frizado) Silva and Manuel Labrincha.

Açores a pé pelas nove ilhas
N.F.- Levou a mochila, o computador e a máquina fotográfica.

Boa caminhada!

Taste Portugal! - Saborei Portugal
View it in full screen and with sound! Enjoy
Ver com ecran aberto e som!
First, the sea and the land. Salt and sun. Then, the olive presses, granaries, wine cellars and fumitories. Bound by a people, a Country. Every day, at dusk, Portugal and the Portuguese, celebrate at the dining table.
The Taste Portugal Programme has in its mission to show the Portuguese unique gastronomy to a globalised world. To invite people to sample the authentic flavours of reinvented delicacies. To educate the palate for wines that have acquired a complex simplicity.

Lembrando Natália Correia - Por João Luis de Medeiros
Caricatura de autor desconhecido
O REPOUSO DA GARÇA
( na morte de Natália Correia – Março 16, 1993 *)
Naquele dia, a cancela da ilha ficara aberta
por masculino descuido, e a taramela do destino
aquietou-se para ouvir passar a garça...
Cuidado!
a remoçar o romance de Pedro e Inês;
vejo-te com a batuta da coragem
a desafiar o antigo solfejo de Alice Moderno;
e a liberdade recolheu a quartéis…

ROMARIA
Na longa caminhada que se aproxima
Procurarás afinar a tua alma
Pelo grande diapasão
Do universo.
Tu sabes bem que ele existe
E que alguém o faz vibrar.
Ao terceiro dia de jornada
Quando voares nas asas do cansaço
Abre bem os teus ouvidos
Ao seu som único,
Inconfundível.
Ao pressentires que o teu coração pulsa
Na mesma frequência,
Esboça um sorriso.
Atingiste a paz.

Fábrica da Baleia em São Vicente Ferreira, São Miguel, Açores
In 1993, I had an opportunity to take some of the last photos of the whaling processing plant in São Vicente Ferreira, S. Miguel, Azores. The plant was built in 1945 and processed whales caught off the coast from port at Capelas, until the early 1970's.
Since then, the plant was demolished and a swimming area was built to serve the local population.
Unfortunately, all the contents of the plant were lost, except for those that are held in private hands. Additionally, government leaders of the time, did not recognize the importance of establishing this as a museum, to allow visitors to view what was once part of the livelihood of the whale hunters of the time.
And, oh yes, part of the mysticism of visiting the plant while it was in operation, was the smell that lingered in your clothes and body.
I hope that you enjoy this bit of history!

reopened the windows to make known
how the sun ecstatic savors the silky meadows
where the ashes of my dreams lay
scattered in every corner of the island
for you
I shall walk the rusty memories
undress those fears so long hidden
stuffed on the cracks of every stone wall
I shall rip those veils
to make known how the land shines
when the ocean comes on the shores of her mouth
thirsty of waters
while its moans awakening the core
of the land
shaken
by grief and liberation.
I shall unveil every birthmark
each shadow of untold sorrows
I shall bade your body
with the semen of the earth
natural fountains
we will become one
with the warm kiss of the landon a Fall afternoon!
how the sun ecstatic savors the silky meadows
where the ashes of my dreams lay
scattered in every corner of the island

Into the late 1980's, Ponta Delgada had a small, picturesque fishing port in the area of Calheta on the what may have been considered, the almost outskirts of the city. Nearby was a small fish market where truly fresh fish was sold.
As the city grew, it was decided that the port should disappear and that an extension to the shore line avenue be extended. Thus Ponta Delgada lost an emblematic, and problematic area of the city.
It is unfortunate that foresight was not evident in the decision making of the time. I am sure that the avenue's extension could have been accomplished, be it with some sort of bridge, or other option that a good architect, could devise, yet maintain the post card feeling of the locale.
Meanwhile, for those who remember, this archival video is a wonderful way to reminisce and especially to hear the sounds of the ocean and of the Ponta Delgada of those days.

Power of the Spirit
San Diego's Saint Agnes Church is included in the book and counted with the participation of Donna Alves Calhoun, Virgina Correia and José Alves on behalf of the Portuguese Historical Center.
Great and exciting news, “The Power of the Spirit” is almost here.
Power of the Spirit, a history of churches in California, either built by Portuguese, or where Portuguese immigrants played a major role in their development into productive parishes and community gathering centers.
It has been a labor of love, filled with obstacles and research difficulties - seven years in the making! We finally see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel; the “Power of of the Spirit” manuscript is due out to the printer on March 30th. 2012. Publication and availability to the public are expected early Summer.
As with the other books in our Research Collection, Power of the Spirit will be published in a Deluxe Edition, and promises to be an intriguing capture of the spiritual fortitude of the Portuguese diaspora in early California.
The book focus is two fold: a) The church buildings, their pastors, their history and how they came into existence; b) The human stories, the drama, the sacrifices and indomitable spirit of the Portuguese communities in early California.
Be sure to follow our blog at www.PortugueseBooks.Org. for updates on the exact publication date of this important book.

U.P.S.E.S. Chapel Restoration Committe - José M. L. Alves
In the mid 1980's I served on the board of the U.P.S.E.S. Hall, San Diego, and was the chairman of the Chapel Restoration Committee.
Recently, I ran across the outline for the restoration, that included the members of the committe. Most of the objects were met and some are still kept.
In the following Christmas after the restoration, a "Presépio", "Lapinha" (nativity scene"), was built and opened to the public in the Chapel. The nativity scene was built by Francisco Gonçalves and myself, and contained many figurines that had been part of Mary Moniz's nativity scene, that she had built for may years in her home. It also contained more than 5,000 lights and was also the first time that the Chapel was illuminated in the outside. This tradition was maintained for several years, and in its later years was coordinated by Manuel Domingos.
The ladies that maintained the chapel open during the Christmas season were, Deutilde Varley, Helen Labruzzi, Virgina Correia, Phyllis Rose, Estela Pimental, and others that I do not recall.
Many visitors came to visit from mid December to King's Day on January 6. Many members of the Portuguese Community, brought their children and grandchildren to experience a tradition that was done in many homes in Point Loma, and had been lost. Unfortunately, this tradition was discontinued.
The was tradition started, while I was president and after the Portuguese Historical Center was moved to the U.P.S.E.S. Hall, for it had been started while the PHC was at the Upshur Street address. Most of the figures, that became part of the nativity scene at the Chapel, were the one's that were originally displayed at the PHC's "Presépio".
Today, the Chapel continues to be maintained, and is the focal point of the Festa do Espírito.

Introspecção - João Luis de Medeiros
Ao regressar ao lar convidativo
meu refúgio quando estou cansado,
pergunta-me o lar bastante agressivo:
– O que procuras? Por onde tens andado…?
Eu sei lá – digo. Vivo mergulhado
num mar de ilusões… sempre pensativo.
Mas sigo a jornada preocupado
com o Destino do qual sou cativo…
Será natural tal preocupação?
Não seja apenas uma aspiração
dum futuro pleno de tranquilidade …?
Agora sim… se na realidade
só nasci para amar, ó humanidade
– contigo eu não sinto a solidão…

Sao Miguel – the Azores – EX1R by Pixelking
May 2010, I spent 11 days on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores. It was supposed to have been 15 days but the volcanic ash from Iceland shot down the airport in Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel). So, the first four days of my vacation were spent waiting / hoping for change, in Lisbon. I love planning vacations and this vacation had been ‘underway’ for over a year. I use Google maps / Google Earth to ‘scout’ locations see: www.pixelviking.com so 75% of everything you see in this video is from locations that I found via the Panoramio images in Google Earth. The rest are chosen ‘on location’. I chose to stay at Furnas Lake Villas www.furnaslakevillas.pt after seeing their website. Who wouldn’t enjoy that? Well, I did anyway… Had I had the extra money, I would have rented a bigger car than the small Nissan Micra, which turned out to be too small for the gravel roads, especially since the winter had been very wet and the roads were in bad condition. I could of course just have stayed on the ‘real’ roads but what’s the fun in that — I hope these 9 minutes and 28 seconds don’t feel too long. I did my best to push the camcorder to its limits and the work in post also went beyond what I’ve ever done before. I hope that you at least get a good idea about what there is to see in this ‘almost’ paradise…

The battle for Lisbon’s best pastry
On the streets winding up, down and around the seven hills that comprise Lisbon, and in town plazas throughout the country, the pastelaria or confeitaria (pastry shop) is a mainstay of the Portuguese neighbourhood.
Pastelarias in Portugal stay busy throughout the day as customers pop in to purchase boxes of pastries, or pause for a bit to savour baked morsels and coffee. Rows of flaky, palm-sized pastries fill window displays in stacked pans. The golden-brown confections complement the colour scheme of typical Portuguese architecture: from the burnt orange roofs to the clean white buildings to decorative hues that resemble the colour of butter.
Rather than using elaborate toppings or mouldings, the Portuguese keep their baked goods simple. Each type of pastry varies only slightly from the next, and they often come topped or filled with a sweet, gooey custard. The fundamental ingredient is the egg yolk, which is used in as many ways as possible.
The archetypal Portuguese pastry is the pastel de nata, a custard tart with hints of lemon, cinnamon and vanilla, often sprinkled with powdered sugar and easily consumed in a few bites. It resembles a tiny pie, and the baked, creamy egg custard is cupped in the centre. Throughout the country, the pastel de nata is so adored that discussions about which shop makes the best often become enlivened debates.
Many believe that this sacred Portuguese pastry is found in its most heavenly form at the Antiga Confeitaria de Belem (commonly known as the Pastéis de Belém), located west of downtown Lisbon. It is believed that the first-ever version of this dessert was baked in the same spot more than 200 years ago by nuns at theMosteiro dos Jerónimos, which adjoins the pastry shop. Nuns are credited with creating many of the country’s pastries, and some say the egg yolk became a central ingredient in Portuguese baking because the nuns used so many egg whites to starch their attire.
Pastéis de Belém has been in operation since 1837, and the same, closely guarded recipe has been followed since that very first year. A few “master confectioners” are the only ones who know the art, and they concoct batches of the confection within the confines of a “secret” room in the shop. It is the most-frequented pastry shop in the whole of Portugal, but it is not just tourists who bring the volume of traffic. Locals also know it as the best spot for their most beloved pastries.
Those on a tight schedule order their pastries to take away from the dapper, bow-tied staff behind the counter. Others eat at a table in one of the cafe’s multiple seating areas, adorned with painted blue and white tiles, just steps from the Belem Tower -- a monument from which numerous Portuguese expeditions have set sail.
Lisbon’s kingly Pastelaria Versailles (Avenida da Republica 15 A, 351-21-354-63-40) is a young cafe in comparison, dating back to 1932, but many claim Versailles’ pastel de nata rivals the recipe found at Pastéis de Belém. The sign outside, written in a fanciful script, foretells the baroque-style interior, marked with rich woods, ornate mirrors and staffed with smartly dressed waiters. The cafe is a National Heritage site and is one of the most famous cafes in the country, though its location slightly north of the city discourages tourists from making it for a breakfast or teatime pastry. Other favourites on offer include croissants stuffed with custard or pudim flã (a Portuguese flan).
Pre-dating the Pastéis de Belém, Confeitaria Nacional opened in the capital city in 1829 and once served as the Portuguese monarchy’s official bakery, supplying the family with their daily choice of sweets. The traditional Bolo Rei fruitcake is a house specialty and a must for Portuguese Christmas tables. Though theBolo Rei is originally a French recipe, the Confeitaria was the first to introduce it to Portugal and the bakery has adopted the dessert as their own. The bakery also sets out favourites such asqueijadas de Sintra, a pastry that originated in Sintra, a town 30 minutes northwest of Lisbon, and features a sweet, light cheese in addition to many of the same ingredients as the pastel de nata. Like many pastry shops in Portugal, it is family-owned.

TUNA! CELEBRATING SAN DIEGO'S FAMOUS FISHING INDUSTRY
Mark your calendar -
April 21, 2012 to December 31, 2012
TUNA! Celebrating San Diego's Famous Fishing Industry showcases the tuna industry in San Diego over the course of 100 years, focusing on the era when San Diego was the world’s tuna fishing capital, from the 1920s until the 1960s. During this time, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese families formed enclaves that thrived along San Diego Bay—each involved in the tuna fishing industry working either on the boats, in the canneries or building the ships and sewing the nets used by the fishermen.
This major family-oriented exhibit lets visitors view the world through the eyes of these families and will include hands-on pole-fishing demonstration stations, packing and canning activities and taking a trip down memory lane with favorite icons of the era like Charlie the Tuna™ and others. Hear their stories and experience what it was like to work in this industry that, for a time, made San Diego the center of the tuna fishing universe.

Tuna Crews That Fished to Fame Cited : Glory Days Recalled, Demise Is Lamented at Statue's Unveiling
October 27, 1986|LEONARD BERNSTEIN | Times Staff Writer
The men who worked and died to make San Diego the once-thriving hub of tuna fishing were remembered Sunday, as the Tunaman's Memorial Statue was unveiled in a ceremony tinged with regret over the decline of the Southern California tuna industry.
From the 1940s, when San Diego was home port to nearly 300 tuna vessels and site of six canneries, the city's share of the industry has shrunk to perhaps 60 vessels because of foreign competition founded on cheap labor. The last San Diego cannery closed in 1984.
Now, with the exception of a single cannery in San Pedro, American tuna canning is based in Puerto Rico and American Samoa. San Diego is a stopping point on the way to San Pedro, a place where tuna seiners come in for repairs, said August Felando, president of the American Tuna Boat Assn.
But the Portuguese Historical Center, and particularly the late tuna boat captain Anthony Mascarenhas, were determined that the city's 85-year-old connection with the tuna industry would not be forgotten.
The monument "was born out of the idea that the tuna men should be remembered for their contribution to San Diego and the world," said Jose Alves, president of the center. Erected south of the fishing pier on Shelter Island, the 16-foot-tall bronze sculpture depicts Portuguese, Italian and Japanese tuna men reeling in a "three-man fish"--a tuna big enough to require the work of all three, said sculptor Franco Vianello.
Mascarenhas led the five-year drive to raise $100,000 to build the monument and the fight to find it a site. He died last year, shortly before the sculpture was completed, Alves said.
According to Felando, San Diego tuna men in the early part of the century expanded tuna fishing into the South Pacific and later the Atlantic. During World War II, 49 vessels became part of the U.S. Navy, "participating in every major naval campaign in the Pacific," with the loss of 21 boats, he said.
After the war, when the development of "purse seine" or net fishing replaced the old rod-and-reel technique, the development here of huge, sleek "seiners" revolutionized the field and was copied around the world, Felando said.
But cheap foreign labor and U.S. tariff policies soon hurt American tuna fishing, and the exodus from Southern California began, despite the fact that today world tuna consumption is as strong as ever, Felando said.
Sunday, Mascarenhas' wife, Rita, laid a wreath on the monument and his sons, Leonard and Michael, threw one into the bay to commemorate dead tuna men.
"This memorial will mean many things to many people," Felando said. "Some will recall the men who were lost, the boats (that were) lost." Others will remember the tuna men's "strength, vitality and willingness to take a risk," he said.
I ran across this article while doing research. I thought it was interesting to revisit what was said in 1986 when the Tunaman's Memorial was dedicated. JMLA
